Lake District Places To Visit - Barrow in Furness
18 Apr 2008

Barrow in Furness ... the historic maritime gateway to the Furness peninsula. One of the best kept secrets in Britain, Barrow is a Victorian town with a proud heritage of innovation, surrounded by beautiful beaches and inspiring scenery. It is a destination of surprises.

You will find The Dock Museum, Barrow's flag ship attraction, Admission is free; ... Furness Abbey, the dramatic ruins of one of the largest Cistercian Abbeys in England with its Visitor's Centre; ... South Lakes Wild Animal Park: … Forum 28 an innovative Theatre and Arts Centre ... Hollywood Park Leisure Complex … 3 internationally renowned nature reserves, the Laserzone, Art Gene, beautiful beaches and coastal walks and factory shopping in Dalton and Lindal.

Barrow is Cumbria's largest town where major national stores mingle with local specialist shops in a spacious pedestrianised town centre. For bargain hunters, the Indoor Market, one of the County's largest is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Barrow has an excellent choice of cafes, restaurants and pubs and throughout the year the town hosts events, street entertainment and festivals.

Barrow is surrounded by miles of beaches, each unique in character and the coastline boasts two internationally renowned nature reserves. Just off the coast is Piel island with its 14th century castle, (English Heritage) which is served by the Roa Island ferry service.

Barrow and the neighbouring island of Walney, offer a selection of scenic walks. There are beautiful coastal walks including the new Red Man's Way along Walney Channel. The Cistercian Way, a 33 mile walk along the paths, tracks and byeways that fringe of northern shores of Morecambe Bay passes through the Town. Barrow is also on the Cumbria Coastal Way and the Cumbria Cycleway.
