Lake District - New Fell Walking Safety Course Starts
18 Apr 2008

ADVENTUROUS fell walkers are being given the opportunity to learn basic mountain skills that could prevent them getting into life-threatening situations.

Each year more and more people flock to the Lake District, attracted by the beauty of the fells. However many of these people venture on to the hills without adequate preparation, or navigation skills.

As a consequence, mountain rescue teams are being called out an increasing number of times each year searching for walkers who have got lost.

advertisementTeam members have spent many night-time hours, often in appalling conditions, conducting searches, with only scant information as to the likely location of the casualty.

Stuart MacKenzie, an international mountain leader and a member of the Langdale and Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, has launched a Navigation Training Service.

The course promises to help walkers understand their map, develop their confidence, improve their safety and increase their enjoyment.

More information is available by calling 01539 735414 or emailing info@mountainplus.co.uk .
